I am giving away a free e-book.How do i count ebooks downloaded?Is one hit the same as one ebook being downloaded?How do I count visitors?Best,Nelson Lauver

That's roughly correct. Each hit will be a request for that file. It's not completely accurate, as some requests may be cancelled before they finish downloading the file, but it's enough to give a good idea of how many downloads you're seeing.
