What does (Direct Request) mean in the Referrers table?

The top item in my Referrers table is "Direct Request".

What does it mean and what generates those hits? It is crucial for me to understand so that I can interpret my traffic correctly.

Thanks!

Direct Request refererrs to the root of your domain are pretty common. Most of it is simply traffic from spiders. It's also sort of a catch-all for Webalizer when it can't parse an actual referrer for a given page.

It's probably safe to ignore it.
